Washington Learns
Submitted by chadlupkes on Tue, 09/13/2005 - 5:17am.Gov. Gregoire is moving forward with her Washington Learns initiative, which has been developed using the guidelines of SB 5441 and HB 1152 from the 2005 Legislative Session. This initiative breaks education down into three levels; Early Learning, K-12 and Higher Learning.

This is a study commission that will evaluate where we are and what we can do to improve. This is a great development for the kids in our state, and we should watch carefully and attend meetings when we can. We should also consider inviting some of the board members and/or staff from the Early Learning subcommittee to come to one of our meetings for periodic updates. They need to know that we support their endeavor, especially for the youngest children who are learning the most between the ages of Birth to 6. This is what the Success by Six program is all about, under whatever name they choose.

Hotwire Online Coffeehouse - Shoreline
In hopes of getting more people out to our meetings we're going to an every other month schedule. We'll be looking to have key players in children's services come in for the first hour of the meeting to talk about creating a state-wide Success by Six program. The second hour will be strategizing around significant upcoming events; e.g., '05 election, '06 leg. session, etc.
Email me if you'd like to be added to the event reminder list.
Hope to see you there,

King County Early Childhood and School Readiness Action Agenda
Submitted by John in Seattle on Thu, 07/28/2005 - 3:40pm.Blueprint for implementing a Success by Six like program in King County.

I've put this on our links page but wanted to have it on the front page, too.
It seems like successful implementation of this agenda in King County could pave the way for a state-wide program. What do you think?

And we thought they were totally ignorant of the needs of our children... What is incredible is that they did this and then did almost nothing to improve the situation. Let's continue to do research and find out what this administration is actually doing.
SX6 Proposal to Washington State Leg.
Submitted by thepluts on Thu, 06/30/2005 - 4:58pm.Please feel free to use this space to modify a proposal for SX6. We hope to get something together to give to Frank Chopp in the next few months before the state leg. goes back into session.
Citizen Action on Prenatal/Early Childhood Family Assistance:
OK, I have no idea how to write a proposal so I would like to start this process by brainstorming.
-What SX6 has done in Vermont - increase in prenatal care and healthy live births, decrease in sexual and physical abuse and (hopefully) accurate numbers on the reduction of new incarcerations and increase in collage enrollment.
-Funding source? Phillip, is there any word on that foundation you mentioned a couple of month ago? What other foundations are out there? What did Vermont do? Minneapolis got smart, progressive busniness owners involved, Honeywell etc.
